UPSKILL MICRO-CREDENTIAL

Emotionally Intelligent Leadership (EIL)

Leadership has long been a topic of interest to companies, researchers, managers and individuals. We can all share experiences of having great leaders, and some questionable leaders. You may be surprised to see that great leaders show many characteristics of emotional intelligence (EI) – a desirable and incredibly effective set of skills that will separate amazing and successful leaders from the rest.

Simply defined, Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to monitor your own emotions as well as those of others. EI includes our ability to understand others, including what motivates others, how to work cooperatively with them and how to better empathise, negotiate and understand others.

Leaders with higher EI perceive emotions more accurately and thus use this information to help others with tasks, know when to approach them, as well as manage emotional changes in themselves and others. The higher the level of EQ the person has, the more likely they are to succeed at work, in their personal and professional relationships and in bouncing back after failure.

Course Overview

Emotional Intelligence (EI) relates to our ability to understand, negotiate and empathise with others, and becoming more visible in both community and corporate environments. This course has been specifically designed for helping professionals, building on your existing knowledge, skills and practical experience, and helping you develop understanding, techniques and strategies to assist you as you continue your professional journey.

The Course includes a Study Guide, a Book of Readings, and recorded webinars, and is completed through passing a multiple-choice assessment. The Study Guide has been designed to challenge some common misconceptions about leadership as well as to enrich your own skills through the development of your emotional intelligence. These are supported by selected readings (all contained within the Book of Readings), each of which has been selected to expand or elaborate upon a particular area of knowledge or skill.

Upon completion of this course you will have:

To understand how Emotional Intelligence differs from other styles of leadership
Use Emotional Intelligence to help improve communication, motivation and workplace culture
How to regulate emotions and demonstrate empathy
Understand how Emotional Intelligence can be used in conflict management and difficult conversations

Course Outline

This Course is divided into 5 Parts:

The Upskill begins by learning about common theories and views of leadership before turning to the main principles of Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Quotients. It also provides a link to a short test where you can discover your Emotional Quotient. The five elements of Emotional Intelligence are also examined, as this will form the framework for the rest of this course. Finally, this section looks at how we can use Emotional Intelligence to help develop a growth mindset.
A main aspect of Emotional Intelligence is self-awareness and how our emotions influence our behaviours, ourselves and those around us. Self-awareness relies on the person being in tune with how they are feeling and understanding what is causing the emotion. Emotional regulation then takes it a step further and looks at how, and when, the person should display those emotions. Rather than suppress emotions, this section looks at the Process Model for Emotional Regulation.
Organisational culture can make or break companies. It is a combination of shared behaviours, values, attitudes and rules that maintain the status quo and give ‘feel’ to the company. Therefore, Emotional Intelligence can be used as a vital tool when looking to improve organisational culture. This part of the Upskill explores how to do this by focusing on how to overcome barriers to communication, as well as how to understand employee motivation and goal setting.
Conflict is unavoidable, and although many people find it uncomfortable, it does serve a purpose. Using Emotional Intelligence in conflict management can help lead to growth, better relationships and improved outcomes for all. In an organisation, we can see different types of conflict, from clashing personalities, competing priorities, to managerial changes and cultural changes. This does not mean that conflict is bad or good- conflict simply is. This section will look at how Emotional Intelligence can be used to improve conflict efficacy.
The final section of this Upskill provides a detailed case study and activities where you can put your newly learnt skills into action. It consists of five different parts where you follow a team leader, their manager and a member of the team as they deal with common workplace issues by utilising some of the Emotional Intelligence concepts and strategies covered in the previous sections of this course.
