Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ONLINESELF-PACED2 MONTHS1 UNITS

UPSKILL MICRO-CREDENTIAL

In this micro-credential you’ll learn about the hugely popular modern behavioural therapy, Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). ACT aims to help people live a rewarding and meaningful life while accepting the presence of unwanted and often unpleasant thoughts, emotions, memories, urges and sensations that inevitably occur.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a modern behavioural therapy that aims to help people live a rewarding and meaningful life while accepting the presence of unwanted and often unpleasant private thoughts, emotions, memories, urges and sensations that inevitably occur. ACT teaches people to embrace their feelings and emotions rather than fighting or running away, which is often the natural instinct. ACT is an approach built upon a values-based system that encourages individuals to understand what their own values are and to live by these.

The main goal of ACT is to increase psychological flexibility – the ability to be present in the moment, with awareness of our experiences and to take action and persist in behaviours that are guided by our values. If we can be more conscious and open to our experiences and act on our values, we gain meaning and a sense of purpose. We are also better equipped to deal with the challenges that life brings.

The Upskill on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) introduces you to this increasingly popular and commonly-embraced third-wave behaviour therapy. This course has been specifically designed for helping professionals, building on your existing knowledge, skills and practical experience, and helping you develop understanding, techniques and strategies to assist you as you continue your professional journey.

The Course includes a Study Guide, a Book of Readings, and recorded webinars, and is completed through passing a multiple-choice assessment. The Study Guide will take you through the core content of the course, including information on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, professional considerations, examples of practices for your work with clients, and more. These are supported by selected readings (all contained within the Book of Readings), each of which has been selected to expand or elaborate upon a particular area of knowledge or skill.

Upon completion of this course, you will have learnt how to:

  • Understand the principles of ACT and the Hexaflex

  • Examine how ACT can be implemented in your client sessions

  • Look at the relationship between mindfulness and ACT

  • Learn how to use specific interventions

Course Outline

This Course is divided into 3 Parts:

The Upskill starts with information about the origins of ACT, before going into more detail about the ACT Hexaflex and its goal of psychological flexibility. It also focuses on the crucial role of identifying and understanding your personal values. Following this, you will review how ACT can be used in both individual and group settings. The section concludes with a case study, demonstrating the use of ACT with a client with anxiety.

Now we have a basic understanding of ACT, it’s time to look at how to implement it into your client work. To begin with, we examine how to structure an ACT intervention and discuss in the first session, including techniques such as Join the DOTS, Thought Suppression Exercise and the Quicksand Metaphor. Next, we investigate how to work with the client to come up with value-aligned treatment goals before continuing our case study.

The last two sections focus on the many different activities that can be used with clients. These include interventions for acceptance (Wade Through the Swamp, Unwelcome Party Guest); contact with the present moment (Modes of the Mind, Mindfulness); defusion (Master Storyteller, Word Machine); self as context (The Chessboard, The Observer); value identification (The Compass, The Heroes); committed action (Life Domains, Skiing); and SMART goals.
