Hello!

Welcome to Edition 106 of Institute Inbrief. In the early 1950s, Ellis experimented with other treatment frameworks, from humanism to behaviour therapy. From such experimentation, Ellis founded what is now referred to as Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (or REBT).

In this edition's featured article, we discuss Ellis' A-B-C sequence and the role of counsellors in disputing clients' irrational beliefs.

Also in this edition:

  • News - Funded Diploma of Counselling Training Courses Available in NSW
  • Counselling Dilemma: Relationship Counselling
  • Review - Understanding Influence
  • Counselling Connection updates
  • Upcoming Seminar dates
  • Loads of resources, events and opportunities

Enjoy your reading!

Funded Diploma of Counselling Training Courses Available in NSW

Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors (AIPC) has funded training places available under the Productivity Places Program with the training funded by the NSW Government in partnership with the Australian Government.

The places are available in the Diploma of Counselling course and are open to residents of New South Wales who are currently employed. This qualification skills learners to work in a Counselling role providing support to clients facing a range of difficult situations in their lives.

With your recognised counselling qualification you'll be ready to take on exciting new job opportunities (increased government funding is creating many new opportunities) or enhance your current role to take advantage of future promotions.

Or maybe you'd like to set up your own private counselling practice and experience the many personal and financial rewards that working for yourself provides.

An Australian Bureau of Statistics Labour Force Survey in February 2006 highlighted that over the last few years the counselling profession has grown at a rate of 23.1%, outgrowing all other Occupations by more than 200%.

Benefits of studying a Diploma of Counselling with AIPC are:

  1. Most of your courses fees are funded by the Productivity Places Program.  You have minimal out-of-pocket expenses!

  1. Learn externally from home with high quality workbooks and course materials.

  1. Extensive support during your course from experienced, qualified educators.

  1. Progressive practical sessions to assist with transitioning your skills into the workplace.

The Diploma of Counselling course is delivered through a blended, flexible delivery format. This method is appealing to learners whom have family and/or job search commitments.

Proactive and suitable training support and follow up is provided to all students through the AIPC Study Assistance Line and regular contact from Institute staff.

We invite you to contact AIPC's Sydney Student Support Centre on 1800 677 697 or Port Macquarie Student Support Centre on 1800 625 329 if you would like further information about these funded training places.

Article: Understanding Influence

Published: Edition 48

Influence is a governing concept in any decision-making process, relationship and ultimately, behavioural response. It is also the raw material for the production of concepts such as power, persuasion, attraction, and many others which are highly relevant in our daily lives.

In this article, however, we will focus particularly on the appropriate, positive application of influence in the counselling relationship.
