Why Counselling and Why Now?

The need for counsellors in Australia has never been greater. Increasing societal pressures and eroding values have created a massive need in our communities for qualified counsellors.

This need is evidenced by a recent Australian Labor Force Survey indicating the Counselling profession has outgrown All Other Occupations by more than 200%.

And the industry employing counsellors, the Community Services and Health Sector, is predicted to be the fastest growth industry over the next 5 years.

As you can see, the demand for counsellors is high, and growing. It's this demand that's creating significant opportunities for you in this rewarding field.

As a qualified counsellor, there are numerous opportunities for you in the Community Services and Health fields as an employee and in private practice. You can make a real difference in the areas of grief and loss; relationships; abuse; adolescents; family; stress; trauma recovery; addictions, mental health and many more.  The demand for your help is very real.

We've helped people from all sorts of backgrounds become counsellors.

Many of our students are professionals seeking to acquire counselling skills as an adjunct to their core profession, such as teachers, nurses, ministers of religion, corrective services officers and administrators.

And many of our students, having not studied for many years, are seeking a fresh start in a rewarding profession.

Our students and graduates all share the same strong desire to assist others. Maybe you are someone that people turn to for help in times of need. Someone that displays a natural empathy to others. Maybe you've been through personal challenges that have inspired you to assist others facing similar circumstances.

Whatever your background, you too can become a qualified counsellor with the Institute, help other people, and start an exciting and highly rewarding career!

Most reputable counsellor registration bodies are making supervision a mandatory stipulation for higher levels of practitioner membership. Counselling supervision is becoming an essential safeguard for clients, a support for counsellors and a process through which counsellors can develop their skills.

The Institute's Supervisor Training Program was developed in response to the trend within the counselling industry towards supervision requirements for newly-qualified counsellors.

The Supervisor Training Program enables Counsellors to progress to Counselling Supervisors. As a trained Counselling Supervisor, you will be able to:

  • Conduct supervision sessions using various supervision interventions;
  • Provide effective evaluation and feedback to counsellors being supervised,
  • Address the ethical and legal considerations of supervision.

By completing this program, you will also enhance your counselling expertise which will widen the range of counselling services you can offer to counsellors and clients.

The program is a self-paced course designed to facilitate the development of supervisory knowledge and skills for experienced counsellors. It is endorsed by the Australian Counselling Association and will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to become an effective supervisor.

Upon completion of the Supervisor Training Program, you will be eligible to apply for listing on the Australian Counselling Association's Supervisor List.

For more information about the Program: www.aipc.net.au/enquiries/supertrain. You may also contact your nearest Student Support Centre.
